Abstract

The study of consciousness possess considerable relevance in contemporary philosophy of mind. However, the “scientistic” approach that dominates the aforementioned discipline, although of undisputed usefulness, contributes to the rejection of other approaches whose explanatory value has proven to be illuminating in the study of mind, consciousness and the body. One of these approaches can be found in the philosophical works of Friedrich Nietzsche. The causal determinism of the mind-body relation proposed by the german philosopher has been posited through similar proposals for renowned neuroscientists and philosophers. Nevertheless, the historical and theoretical importance of Nietzsche’s contributions hasn’t been recognized as such. The purpose of this article is to show the subtleties of the causal determination in the mind-body relation and its implications in the actual discussions about the nature of consciousness.

Mario Colon, Universidad de Puerto Rico

Cursó estudios subgraduados en psicología y filosofía en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, recintos de Ponce y Rio Piedras, respectivamente. Sus áreas de interés investigativo comprenden la metafísica, epistemología, filosofía de la ciencia y filosofía de la mente. Además se auxilia de la constante producción investigativa de disciplinas como la neurociencia, las ciencias cognitivas y la psicología. Ha dictado conferencias y presentado ponencias sobre diversos temas filosóficos como el problema de la consciencia en Nietzsche, consecuencias metafísicas de la propuesta trascendental kantiana ante la disputa Leibniz-Newton, y sobre el concepto de “inmanencia” como agente reunificador del monismo espinosista. Actualmente se encuentra desarrollando su tesis para el grado de Maestría en filosofía en la Universidad de Puerto Rico sobre la naturaleza del umbral que separa los estados mentales inconscientes y conscientes según la tesis perspectivista nietzscheana.
